Project USS Strong DD467
Yesterday I received an email from the son of a Strong survivor, Ensign Keith N. Sherlie. Mr. Sherlie arrived on Strong in January of 1943 from Espiritu Santo and was with Captain Wellings when the ship went down, both being rescued hours later by the USS Gwin. The son, Ross Brennan found an audio oral history his father had recorded at a local library with Sherlie talking about how he arrived at Strong and going all the way through the sinking and rescue. It's 36 minutes of very compelling memories and a few names are mentioned, including Al, Curran, Captain Wellings and George Vedder ILL. Ross compiled the audio with photos and video to build a presentation on YouTube. It's a bit hard to listen to if you are related to Wellings and ILL at the end, but Sherlie had great compassion and care for these men and others he served with. If you would like to listen to his first person account, click the link below:

Tammi JohnsonWelcome to the blog! I'm a life long Kentuckian with a degree in Anthropology, thus a nice background in research, thanks to some great profs at the University of Kentucky. Family and historical research are what float my boat, and this project has been the heart of it for a very long time now. I welcome input and ideas for blog entries, so if you have something to contribute I'll happily post it. Archives
